Do you need to boil Brussel Sprouts before grilling?

No, boiling or blanching Brussel Sprouts is not necessary. As long as you control the temp and flame on your grill you can roast the Brussel Sprouts on the grill just as you would in an oven. Blanching does not add to the flavor to the vegetables. Some may argue that blanching or steaming is necessary because the sprouts need too long on the grill and will eventually burn. However, if you start with a clean grill and use indirect heat blanching is you will find nice grill marks are the perfect compliment to this side dish.

To prepare the Brussel Sprouts put a pound in a mixing bowl. For this recipe I add a little rosemary oil and salt. Once you season them it’s time to fire up the grill.

  • Bring your grill up to 350 degrees.
  • Make sure your grill grates are clean.
  • Place the Brussel Sprouts directly on the grill grates away from the direct heat.
  • Close the grill lid and roast the Brussel Sprouts on the grill.
  • After 10 minutes, using a pair of tongs, check to see if they are burning. Some grill marks are perfect, but if you notice too much char, turn down the heat.
  • After 10 minutes, flip the veggies again.
  • At the 30 minute mark, check for doneness. They should be fork tender.
  • Remove from the grill and let sit for 5 minutes. Finish with an additional splash of rosemary oil.

  • The sprouts will continue to cook after removed from the grill. Don’t wait to take them off when they are already soft.

Ingredients

  • 1 Pound Brussel Sprouts
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Rosemary Oil

Instructions

Bring your gas grill up to 350 degrees.

Make sure your grill grates are clean.

Mix the Brussel Sprouts with salt and a few tablespoons of rosemary oil in a mixing bowl.

Place the Brussel Sprouts directly on the grill grates away from the direct heat.

Close the grill lid and roast the Brussel Sprouts on the grill.

After 10 minutes, using a pair of tongs, check to see if they are burning. Some grill marks are perfect, but if you notice too much char, turn down the heat.

After 10 minutes, flip the veggies again.

Notes

Make sure you have a clean grill. If you don't want to put the Brussel Sprouts directly on the grill grates, you can put them in a cast iron skillet. Have tongs for moving the sprouts.
