A top notch recipe for Pork and Beans on the grill is a necessity! A little heat with a little sweet with a little smoke turns the simple bean into the best grilling side dish!

Whats a great BBQ side dish?

Side dishes are an important part of summer picnics. One of the best dishes to go along with your summer feast is pork and beans. It doesn’t matter if you are slow smoking a pork shoulder or grilling up some burgers, everyone will enjoy this BBQ side dish. The important difference in this recipe that will be different then most pork and bean recipes is the extra step of smoking them on the grill.

This is not a complex recipe which makes it so easy for backyard bbqs or picnics. You just need to prepare these before you start your main picnic protein.

Once you mix all ingredients and sprinkle the bacon on top of the beans put on the grill away from direct heat. I combine a few charcoal briquettes with a handful of cherry wood chunks. Bring the grill temp up to 300 degrees and cook for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Leave the 1/2 pan uncovered and let the smoke of the cherry wood incorporate into the beans.

There are plenty of variations of this recipe. I’ve always kept my recipe about the same though. I’ve always used cannellini beans, bacon, and a ketchup base. The biggest change I’ve made over the years is taking this dish out of the oven and popping the beans on the grill. I just love how the smoke gives this dish a little bit of a different taste. Don’t be afraid to experiment with ingredients though. Maybe a different type of bean. I’ve had fantastic pork and beans that used tomato soup as the base instead of ketchup. I’m very partial to dried onion, but no one says you can’t use fresh chopped onions. Just try different things and see what works best for your taste. That’s the great thing about cooking!

You absolutely can put pork and beans on the grill! The best part of putting pork and beans on a gas grill is the fact you can still get that great smoked beans flavor while controlling the gas temp.

Take out one side of your grill grates and drop down some aluminum foil that has holes poked in it and is wrapped around about two cups of cherry wood chips. The flame will slowly ignite the wood chips and give the pork and beans some great smoke flavor.

So go ahead, throw those BBQ beans on the gas grill!

After 45 minutes add a few more cherry wood chunks.
