This recipe has the smoky bacon jam, smoke from the grill and smoked paprika all working together to give the turkey legs a smoked flavor. Turkey does very well with smoke from the grill and when combined with this sweet heat sauce its a fantastic grilled meal.
How long should you grill turkey legs?
Preheat your gas grill and bring the temperature up to 400 degrees F. Start with the room temperature turkey legs away from the direct heat. Roast the turkey legs on the grill for a 1/2 hour. After a half hour move the legs over direct heat. Grill and rotate the drumsticks every 5 minutes for a total of another 15 minutes over direct heat on the grill.
Once they hit 165 degrees, take the drumsticks off the grill and apply the sauce.
What is Bacon Jam?
Bacon Jam is a condiment consisting of slow cooked bacon that is combined sweet flavors including brown sugar and maple syrup. It also has cooked down onions and sometimes a small amount of vinegar. It delicious on some crackers as a snack, but it does great in sauces as well.
Substitute for Chipotle Powder
Chipotle Pepper Powder is made of smoked jalapeno peppers which adds another layer of smokiness to this recipe. If you can’t find this type of chili powder then look for Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce. One diced pepper mixed with the bacon jam and ketchup will work.
If you can’t find Chipotle Peppers in Adobo sauce then combine a 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne and a 1/2 teaspoon of additional smoked paprika to give you that smoky flavor that has a kick of heat.

Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of ketchup
- 2 tablespoons of bacon jam
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon smoked chipotle powder
Instructions
Combine ketchup, bacon jam, paprika, chipotle powder and salt
Preheat the grill to 400 degrees F
Place turkey legs on the grill rack away from the direct heat.
After 45 minutes place the turkey drumsticks over direct heat.
Grill and rotate every 5 minutes until an internal temp of 165 degrees F
